A ONU precisa mudar de nome? Esse é o questionamento de David Kopel and Michael Krause. Para os autores, o nome da organização é historicamente vinculado à correlação de forças vencedora da II Guerra Mundial, uma situação geopolítica muito distante da realidade hodierna. Os membros da instituição, também, estão muito longe de estarem unidos. Mas nada é mais crítico do que o termo “Nações”, e o caso de Taiwan é explorado para dar mais suporte ao argumento de inadequação do título da instituição. Fiquem com um trecho do trabalho:
It’s time to change the name of the “United Nations.” Originally used to identify the anti-Axis coalition of nations in World War II, today’s “United Nations” members are rarely united on anything. And as the UN’s latest actions against Taiwan’s membership application demonstrate, the UN doesn’t even live up to its own definition of “nations.” And the mechanics of that rejection reveal a growing internal danger at the UN for the United States.
Article 4 of the United Nations Charter states that “Membership in the United Nations is open to all other [non-founding] peace-loving states which accept the obligations contained in the present Charter and, in the judgment of the Organization, are able and willing to carry out these obligations.”
In July, Taiwan applied for membership in the United Nations. By the Charter’s standards, Taiwan should have been speedily admitted.
A forma como se discute e vota na As-sembleia Geral, a composição do Conselho de Segurança, a timidez do Conselho Económico e Social e a fraca contribuição de recursos materiais e financeiros, parece que impedem a intervenção rápida e eficaz desta orga-nização.O agudizar e o surgimento de novas situações,estão a provocar interacções recíprocas que culminam em acontecimentos de crise antes da ONU estar preparada para evitar o indesejável.
A China – pertencente ao Conselho de Segurança e por isso com o direito de veto – deseja a integração de Taiwan. Já Hong-Kong e Macau faziam parte desse processo, apesar de um grupo de países desejar a sua soberania.
